Convention on the Rights of the Child

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20 November 1989.

The objective of the CRC is to protect the specific rights of children. The CRC recognises their civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.

It was adopted because the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was too general to meet the specific characteristics of the rights of the child.

Belgium signed the CRC on 26 January 1990. It ratified it on 16 December 1991. Belgium is therefore obliged to implement all articles of this Convention.
