International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) was adopted on 16 December 1966 by the United Nations General Assembly. It entered into force, in version II, after ratification by 35 States on 23 March 1976.

The ICCPR protects individuals against interference by the State with their rights and freedoms, including the right to life, the right to liberty, the prohibition of torture, etc.

It complements the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

ICCPR

It is, in principle, directly applicable by the courts of the signatory States.

Belgium ratified the ICCPR on 21 April 1983.
